Dealing with Bugs in Latin America

Published October 4, 2020 in Bugs, Insects, etc in LATAM , Mexico - 0 Comments

When growing up in the US…

The only bugs I remember are fireflies that I would mess around with when I was a kid.

The only other bug I remember were bees and wasps…

Like when growing up we had a house that had a wasp issue..

And also in a later time I remember once catching a butterfly trapped in some Halloween pumpkin bucket I had as a kid…

And I threw fire crackers at it and killed it…

Not sure why but I guess I was a dick to butterflies when I was a kid…

But hey, it was trying to steal my fucking candy from my Halloween pumpkin bucket!

Well, anyway…

Suffice to say, I never had too many issues with bugs throughout my life in the US.

But in Latin America, bugs seem much more common…

And while I understand the ecologists out there like the sound of that…

It ain’t so fuckin pleasant…

More often than not, my experiences with bugs down here have been more annoying than anything else.

The basic theme is that it has always felt there are more bugs down here than in the US…

Though I’m not so sure if that is actually true or not..

Just my experience.

And also that standards for building codes or health are lower down here.

Which might invite more bugs into your home…

Let’s go into some minor examples of what I mean…

Cockroaches

In the apartment building I had near Metro CU of Mexico City…

It was like cockroach central from what I noticed.

After a while, I got used to killing all the little fuckers that I found.

But at first, it was really fucking annoying.

In the kitchen or even in my own god damn bedroom!

I remember in particular enjoying a night off from work..

Laying on my bed watching Jade Indica getting gangbanged on Pornhub…

While listening to this version here of “Night Fever” by Bee Gees…

With a drink in my hand of vodka and black tea mix….

And it was feeling like a good Saturday night – a night of “Saturday Night Fever”

Haha haha haha haha….

When all of a sudden a fucking cockroach crawled onto a side pillow and scared the shit out of me.

And I spilled a little bit of my vodka onto my shirt…

God FUCKING damn it!!!

Well, that cockroach was not having a good Saturday night when I found something to kill it with.

But cockroaches are not the only issue down here – an issue I have seen in a few places in Latin America but not everywhere…

The Invasion of Ants

So I am sitting down in my living room in my apartment in Pachuca, Mexico…

When I noticed something strange…

There were a shit ton of ants crawling from a small hole to the sink area…

This hasn’t been the only time I have noticed this…

It happened in another apartment in Mexico City and also in my home stay in Xela, Guatemala…

In this case, I just assumed it was an issue with the building itself…

Where there is an obvious place where ants can come through and I am getting a shit ton of them invading my place!

And some of them would bite me, damn it!

At least in Pachuca that was the case.

Anyway, the landlord in Pachuca fixed it but just another minor issue.

Mosquitos in Mexico City

This article was initially meant to complain about mosquitos in Mexico City.

But I figured I couldn’t write at least a 1,000 words on the subject.

So I decided to make it a larger bug issue article instead.

But mosquitos are definitely one of my worst enemies living in Mexico City.

Though that is probably because they were a big issue in my first apartment over here in Roma.

When living in any neighborhood or going to any apartment that isn’t in…

Roma, Condesa or El Centro…

It seems mosquitos are not so much an issue..

At least they were not an issue whatsoever when living in Pachuca, by Metro CU, Cuatro Caminos…

Or anywhere in Latin America.

Only those specific neighborhoods of Mexico City seem to be where this fucking issue is at.

Especially in Roma.

But speaking of Metro CU….

What the Fuck is That?

Back when I lived near Metro CU of Mexico City…

I had a window of my apartment where there was a glass window with a small space on the top of it…

Where on the other side of that window was the outside of the apartment.

I learned eventually that was an issue as some nights I would have these big looking fucking bugs try to crawl through that gap…

And on the night I noticed this…

One of them basically crawled all the way..

But I took some fucking broom and starting hitting it…

And it was like “oh fuck this shit, I’m going back outside…”

In hindsight, I think they were attracted to the light bulb of my apartment or the light in general.

Because I turned the light off and they stopped fucking with me.

The day after that, I bought some duct tape and covered that gap above the glass window with it.

Never had an issue again with these big ass fucking bugs (whatever they were) trying to invade my room.

But they would often fly against my window – literally do some direct smack into the window to try and get inside.

But they never bothered me again basically as they couldn’t  get inside.

This Scorpion Will Stab Your Balls!

I have a friend in Mexico City named Bryan…

Who lives in another neighborhood down here.

Well, one day, he found a random scorpion in his kitchen of his apartment.

He ended up trying to smash it and I don’t remember if he ever killed it or not.

He joked though (or was it a joke or a fear?) that the scorpion could have stabbed him in the balls while he was sleeping…

Well, I know another guy in Mexico who had a scorpion issue.

Who lives in Northern Mexico who I remember mentioning that he found a scorpion in his place also.

Thankfully, I never found a scorpion down here in any place I lived.

I would probably lose my fucking mind…

Buy a gun at the nearest gun store…

And fucking shoot it.

Or buy some metal boots and stomp it.

Whatever the fuck it takes.

That sounds like some crazy ass shit.

Yeah…

What if it stabs you in the balls while you are sleeping?!?!

Or what if it is laying on your chest just chilling while you wake up and see that?!?!

THE FUCK

So I’m glad I haven’t had this issue…

And while scorpions are not bugs, I figured I might as well mention it here.

Bed Bugs

Now bed bugs are not unique to Mexico and cockroaches are not either…

But in all the apartments, hotels and motels I have been to…

Never had an issue with them until the apartment I am in right now as of this writing.

Thankfully, my new apartment owner fixed the issue when I reported it...

But it did stress me out as I had just moved in and was wondering if I would need to leave this place..

Since I wasn’t sure if she would fix it – not every landlord in Mexico is very professional or willing to fix issues in their apartments.

As you can read here where one landlord I had didn’t care if the apartment would catch on fire or not…

So I had low expectations regarding this when I saw the bed bugs and thought I might have to leave this place but she did fix the issue thankfully.

Either way, another story and if you want to read more on that, check this article out here.
